Duty-free at Keflavik Airport - The Best Secret for Beer Lovers

This may seem like a slightly off-the-wall post on a blog that basically talks about clues that tend to facilitate those who, like us, travel with children. However, traveling with children does not invalidate you if you enjoy drinking your wine and your beer when in moderation.

For us, traveling is also about trying to get to know the culture of the country and we also feel that much of a country is transmitted through its relationship with gastronomy, so a fundamental part of a trip is to experience food and, the typical drinks from where we are and this is really very important to us.

Well, when we arrived in Iceland, we were well aware that prices would be among the most expensive we have ever encountered anywhere in the world, and after our experience, we were assured that of all the places we have already had the privilege to know, this was one in which the expenses related to food was higher (if you want to know ideas on how to save money on your trip to Iceland, you can see here our post), and especially alcoholic drinks are particularly high, hence which we set out for the reason of this post which, in away, may seem a bit strange on this blog.

Generally, we tend to not take long in the Duty-Free shops around the world, what we tend to notice is that, generally, the prices turn out to be similar that outside the airport and very often even more expensive. However, the same can not be said about the Duty-Free shop at Keflavik Airport, at least as far as alcoholic beverages are concerned. In relation to the other items that normally are in the duty-free shops, namely for souvenirs, food, clothes, we did not check advantages in relation to buying during our trip to Iceland, it is possible to find cheaper or for the same price in the city of Reykjavik but, due to the large taxes in Iceland on Alcohol and Tobacco, these products tend to be much much cheaper than outside the airport.

Never, like at Reykjavik airport, have we seen anything like that. On the way out of the plane from London, we encountered a large number of Icelanders who drove to the Duty-free shop after leaving the airport. And, with great joy, leave the shop loaded with liquor and beer. With natural curiosity we were able to see prices and, we guarantee, it pays a lot to buy a few beers if you want to try Icelandic beer (as far as we know, there is no wine in Iceland, it is not at all suitable for vineyards).

With this, we are not saying that it is worth buying alcohol and Tobacco when you are returning to your country of origin (it will probably be much cheaper in your country of origin than in Iceland) but when you get to Iceland and have the desire to try some Icelandic beers throughout your trip, we can ensure that alcoholic beverages are much cheaper than outside the airport. We did not smoke, so we did not see the price difference, but the adults in the family like to try the beers from the different countries we visited, and in Iceland the price for a pint usually runs around 8 euros per beer 2018), so we can guarantee that it makes up for the purchase of beer at the airport.

And, one of the advantages of Iceland is that, as it is usually cold, you can store beer in your car's suitcase and it's always good to drink, it's like having a shop open 24 hours a day.
