Best way to get from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Khao San Road, Bangkok
Bangkok was allways a dream for us and, we finally we had the oportunity do do it! So, we did some plans and, one of the questions we had was: "How to get from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Khao San Road, Bangkok?".
And whay Khao San Road? For our family trip to Bangkok, we chose to stay in Old Bangkok, as it was easier
for us to access the Temples and maximize our time of stay. By foot, Grab Car or tuk tuk, we wood be close to the major acttractions. And, having made this choice, we sought to see how best way to get from Don Mueang
Airport to Khao San Road.
And this may not be an easy task at first sight, because this airport is far from Bangkok (more than 25 kms from Khao San Road) and when doing a
first investigation through Google Maps on the best way to reach our destination by
public transport, we were scared by the times presented (about 2 hours travel).
Already several people had been referring to Bangkok has a huge city with an
often chaotic traffic and, the idea of staying two hours in traffic after a long
flight or have to change means of transport, it was not at all the scenery more
attractive, so we considered the taxi, which would always be more expensive.
The costs we've seen through our research on the internet, from the airport to
Khao San Road, it would be something around 400 BAHT (something like $ 12 USD
or € 10). Allong with the meter, taxis add a surcharge and the tolls.
It was not an extremely expensive thing, but through our research we
discovered something more budget friendly, namely the A4 bus, which we highly
recommend and, we wanted to pass on our experience, to help you organize your
future family trip.
Well, as we had mentioned, we discovered this bus, which is widely used by
locals to reach their destination and is very cheap and extremely efficient.
For 50 BAHT (less than $ 1.5 USD and € 1.2), there is a bus (old but with air
conditioning) that will leave you in Khao San Road in about 40 minutes (in the
two trips that we made it was how long it travel) and it will be a great feeling to explore the streets
of Bangkok feeling has a local.
Despite being a bus with a few years, we are obliged to say that we feel
perfectly safe in our family trip, traveling with a child in this mode of
transportation.
How to get the A4 bus at Dom Mueang
So let's get to what matters, that is, what you have to do to get on the
bus.
One thing you have to bear in mind is that in order to pay for the ticket
you will have to make it in cash, namely in BATH, so if you do not bring the
local currency, we suggest you to exchange money at the airport, or use an ATM machine. They are both easy to find at the airport.
As we mentioned, the price is 50
BAHT per person but, in the case of children, we think that with more than 1m20
in height they pay in full and, lower, they do not pay. In our case, our son
happened both situations, pay and not pay but, because the value was so low, we
did not care when we did it.
To get to the orange bus after landing (Bus A1, A2, A3 and A4) you only
have to follow the BUS directions when you are inside the terminal, and go to
Exit 6.
When leaving, it will not be too difficult to find the orange buses (they are just in front of the exit), and each one of them presents a large poster with the indication A1, A2, A3 and A4.
Do not forget, for Khao San Road you will catch the A4.
Do not forget, for Khao San Road you will catch the A4.
The A4 bus runs from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and usually it is not
necessary to wait too long (in our case, never more than 20 minutes)
As we mentioned, tickets will have to be bought in cash and do not worry
about looking for where to buy the ticket before you take the bus. as it be done inside the bus. Shortly after the bus departs, an employee will come
to you and collect the 50 BATH of the tickets.
A4 Route Bus
After leaving the airport, the bus makes the following route:
- Don Mueang Airport
- Tollway
- Sirat Expressway
- Yommarat Lan
- Luang Phan Fa
- Democracy Monument
- Wat Bowonniwet
- Khao San Road
- Sanam Luang
Inside the bus there is no visual indication to indicate the next station, but the ticket clerk tells you before arriving at the stop. However,
just to be sure, tell him that you will be to Khao San Road and, before you get there, you will be
warned.
When you arrive, it will not be exactly the Khao San Road, but in Chakrabongse Road, which is a few meters from your destination, as well as Rambuttri, another nearby street also worth visiting, with several hotels, restaurants and local market.

Travel duration
It is always difficult to give certainty about the duration of a trip
within the city of Bangkok but, as it is a trip that is performed by the
motorway, it tends to be much faster. In our case,
it never took longer than 40 minutes.
Return to Don Mueang Airport (DMK) on A4 Bus
As for return, there is not much to say. The price is the same, the
frequency of the buses is identical but, we could not fail to leave some
advice.
The first is the exact location where you can take the bus, which can be
found here on Google maps (clink), and is on Chakrabongse Road (Khao San).
Another issue is that, contrary to what you might expect, there is not really a bus stop as we are accustomed to seeing. What you will find on a pole is the indication of the different buses that pass through that particular place and, when we speak, pass, it is really pass, because if no one signs, the most certain thing will be to pass without stopping, so you must be aware and wave when you see the orange bus with the A4 in front of you.
