Day 2 in Iceland - From Reykjavik to Hella with Golden Circle (230 kms)

Day 2 in Iceland - From Reykjavik to Hella with the Golden Circle (230 kms)

We leave Reykjavik after the breakfast and headed straight to Thingvellir, our first stop of the famous Golden Circle. The Golden Circle is the most wanted route made by tourists when visiting Iceland. You could easily do a one-day tour around Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. The earth, fire and water tour. You can do it starting and ending in Reykjavik, and it’s something like 300 kms. You can join a tour, there’s a lot of offer, or rent a car. I really think that renting a car is the cheaper and funniest option, you can stop whenever you want and, in Iceland, I can promise you that you will have a lot of reasons to stop and be overwhelmed whit all the beauty around you.

Has we told before, our plan was to do the ring road around Iceland so, instead of returning to Iceland, after we do the Golden Circle, we would go straight to Hella, were we slept our second night on Iceland.

Thingvellir- After less than a 50 kms travel, we arrived at Thingvellir- Þingvellir National Park. It’s there that you will see the first Parliament of the world (started in the year of 930 and it went to the XIX century). The ancient Icelandic farmers use to get together for two weeks every summer for the parliament sessions.

Here you will find a slot that delimits the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. In here, you can actually be in America whit one foot and in Europe whit the other. Its really pretty cool and beautiful. And yes, you start to see the waterfalls that you imagine in Iceland but, on that matter, that’s just the beginning.

Thingvellir is also a important place for Iceland because it was there that the independence was declared. Sense 2004 that UNESCO declare it has a World Heritage.

During the summer, you can use the service station and tourist information.

Geyser- After Thingvellir, we drove 60 kms to Geyser, a very active geothermal region, also known has Geyser Park. Unfortunately, Geyser doesn’t work has it use to do it but, we have the geyser Strokkur, that its very active and, expels water at a height of 20 meters with a regularity of 5 minutes. Pretty amazing to watch. Tha park is really pretty awesome and, it has a restaurant nearby, so you can eat there and go strait to the next attraction, Gullfos.

Gullfos- Just a 10 kms drive and you arrive at Gullfos waterfall, the golden whaterfall. It’s a “must see” of Iceland, one of the most beautiful whaterfalls of Iceland and, a great place for pictures. You have there the Gullfoss kaffi , where you can eat a lamb soup. We didn’t eat but, its famous around travelers.

We followed our trip and headed to Kerið, passing by Skálholt. Skálholt has a pretty church but, after a quick photo, we headed to Kerið (57 kms drive).

Kerið- Is a pretty volcanic crater. It used to be for free but, now they charge you 350 ISK, something like €2 / 3 USD.  It’s pretty, and, deserves the money. It was the only natural beauty that we pay in Iceland. The big problem is that, possibly in a not very far future, it will be not the only pay tourist attraction. Probably almost of the awesome places we went will be charged. You can hike to the bottom of the crater, its not very hard, even a 4 years old child could do it.

We followed to Selfoss (16 Kms), looking for a place to eat. Considering that you are in Iceland, it has a good offer of food so, you will not have any problem to eat.
We slept in Lax-á East Rangá Lodge (62 Kms), whit the address Eystri Rangá, Hvolsvöllur, 861, Iceland, and we can easely say it was our best stay in Iceland. We really recommend, so pretty, the accommodations were perfect, great breakfast and, the surrounding scenario was beautiful. A perfect night.

Just to end, we always felt that all the attractions were very safe to go whit children. We tend to say were restaurants, because food is very important when traveling whit small kids and, usually have WC, other essential thing.

We hope you liked our day. You can see our next day here: from Hella to Hofn.
