Reykjavik in One Day - Best Itinerary to Discover the Capital of Iceland in One Day

Its impossible to discover a city on one day. But, our gold of going to Iceland was to discover the wild part of the country, those landscapes we learned to love with Sigur Rós. So, we had to make some choices and, one of them was to spend only one night at Reykjavik. And, with that choice made, we had to do the most we could to enjoy the city in one day. Has you know, this was a family trip, with one child and, one of the things that we usually don’t get to know it the nightlife and, it looks like the night is wild in Reykjavik but, for that you will need to read other blogs, here we are to travel in family.

 So, we are gonna share our itinerary with you. It's not hard to do in one day. but, don't forget your child's stroller, it will help you and, prepare, it may be cold and rain. Don't forget, you are in Iceland!

1- Solfar Sun Voyager

So, this is the Non Stop Family plan, that we made to get the best of the city. We arrived at the city at 11h00 and drove for a little while, and then stop at one of the most beautiful places of Reykjavik, the Solfar Sun Voyager, located next to the Sæbraut road. The sea is so calm and, despite you are just near one of the principal roads of the city, its so quiet. Stay there, just looking at the sea and, you will be already in love whit the city.

2- Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall 

After that, we went to Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre. It’s a 5-minute walk. It’s a recent and very pretty building, whit colored glass façade, inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland. We didn’t go inside but, its very nice to walk around, just beside the sea.


3- Church Hallgrímskirkja

We grab the car and headed to the Church Hallgrímskirkja. It’s the tallest building in Iceland and, just for that, it's impressive. It’s a cool place to see, the interior is very minimalist, just like a lot of things in Iceland.  Just outside the Church is the Statue of Leif Erikson, one Icelandic explorer that is known for being the first European to get to North America.

4- Laugavegur Street

The surrounding park is free, so we leave the car parked for the day, get our luggage’s and went to the Hostel, on Laugavegur Street, just 500 meters walk.  Being a small city, we can easily walk to almost every place and, that’s very comfortable for the ones who love to walk in a city.

5- Skolavordustigur Street

On our way to the hostel, we pass on Skolavordustigur Street, that is known for being the prettiest street of Reykjavik. After that, you get to Laugavegur, leave our bags and, when to explore Laugavegur. Check the stores and, for the ones that want to enjoy the night life, here’s the place to be.

6- Lækjargata Street AND THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE


After that walk, we recommend you to go down the street to see Lækjargata Street and, check on the Prime Minister’s Office.




7- Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, best hot dog in the world?

After that, you go to a “must see” place, Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, the best hot dog in the city and, for some people, the best in the world. We eat and loved, a lot. So did Bill Clinton and members of Metallica.

8- Austurvöllur

After you fill it up whit hot dogs, you can go to Austurvöllur, the oldest square of the city and check at the statue of Jón Sigurdsson, the one that drove Iceland to the independence of Denmark. There you can also see Alþingishús, the new Parliament, and Domkirkjan, the oldest church in the town.

9- Tungata and Tjörnin Pond

Then go to Tungata, where you can see the Christ the King Catedral and, we recomend you to end the walk feeding the birds on  Tjörnin Pond.
