Day 3 in Iceland - From Hella to Hofn (350 Kms).

We had a big day ahead of us so, we woke up early, had our great breakfast at Lax-á East Rangá Lodge and, headed straight to Seljalandsfoss waterfall (25 kms).
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall- This is a pretty cool waterfall and, its just near the route 1, so its impossible to miss. Its accessible for everyone and, you will not have any problem going whit your child. The water falls from over 60 meters and, it’s possible to walk behind the waterfall. It will be a great place for pictures but, you will be wet, for shore. There are facilities near the waterfall.

Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Center- Next, we drove until Ãžorvaldseyri (20 Kms), were you can visit the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Center. For those that don’t remember, it was the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010 that made a big confusion on air traffic on Europe in 2010. In Þorvaldseyri, you can visit the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Center. We didn’t visit but, we stoped and it’s a pretty nice picture to take to the volcano that, fortunately, during our trip, was at sleep…

Don’t forget to stop to say Hi to the lovely and friendly Icelandic horses, and to see the old houses.

Skógafoss Waterfall- We continued our trip to Skógafoss Waterfall (10 Kms), that is also near route 1 (that’s one of the coolest tings about the trip, that there’s so much to see just near the road).  Its one of the most beutifull waterfalls of Iceland, whit 60 high and, if you are lucky (we were), you are presented whit a lovely rainbow. There’s a walking path near the waterfall, and it’s possible to climb up. That its no so easy whit a child, so we didn’t do it.

Its very easy to get there, you can easily park and, here’s a good advice. There’s a small restaurant/caravan, just near the parking, called Sveitagrill Míu -Mia's Country Grill and, has a great Fish-and-ships. If you are a fan, like we are, it’s a great place to eat and go back to the road again.

Airplane Wreck- Well, we now have to be honest. Being whit kids on a trip its great but, it makes you go slower and, in this day, we had a lot planed and, one of the goals was to the probably most famous airplane abandoned wreck in the world. For shore you’ve seen hundred pictures of him and, it was even more famous after it appear on Sigur Rós video Heima Video

The airplane is abandoned in a black sand beach on Solheimasandur (12 kms from Skógafoss) and, if in the past you had the chance to go near by car, now it’s totally impossible. So, you have to walk for 4 kms in a lava desert (8 to come and go). We were running out of time and, whit a child, that walk wood be a long, long time, so it was whit sadness in our hearts that we had to go back to the car.

I wood like to put the link of someone that went there and described how to go. The description was made when you could drive to there but, you can use the same directions and go by car. It has a parking place just in the beginning of the track. How to get there

Dyrhólaey- We drove to Dyrhólaey (17 kms), near Vik. It’s a small peninsula with a 120 meters high cliff. We went there to see puffins but, we sow only one.  But over there you have a magnifying view of the black sand beach, the cliffs, etc. You can also see the lighthouse build by a famous Icelandic architect, Guðjón Samúelsson. It’s was so windy so, be very careful, especially whit kids.

Black Sand Beach of Vic- After that, we went to the Black Sand Beach of Vic (20 Kms), and there you have the Black Beach Restaurant whit facilities. There you can see the impressive black sand beach, standing just near the mountain Reynisfjall, and also the cliffs and the cool basalt column formations.

It's a good place to see seabirds and puffins but, we didn’t had that luck. There you also have a great view of Dyrhólaey. We pass by the village of Vik, were we fill the car whit fuel. That’s one important matter to be careful around Iceland. You don have so many fuel pumps has you wood love to have so, be careful to not drive with little fuel.

Svínafellsjökull Glacier- We spend a little time at Vik, and drove to the 152 Kms to Svínafellsjökull Glacier. Svínafellsjökull is a Glacier tongue, impossible to miss when you are in the Route 1, and in comes from the massive ice cap Vatnajokull, the biggest European glacier. It’s an amazing place to see, and an incredible landscape.

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon- Just 48 kms ahead, you will find the Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon. It’s a lagoon in the end of  Vatnajokull  glacier, and you can see a lot of floating glaciers. Its beautiful but, for us, the best part was still to come. 11 kms ahead of us, we arrived to the deep glacial lagoon: Jökulsárlón.  Here we are at the at the lowest point of Iceland, and one of the most beautiful. In here there’s always a bunch of icebergs slowing floating toward the sea. The icebergs are a mixture of white and baby blue and, it’s a magical place. For shore you already seen it a lot of movies, just like James Bond or Lara Croft.

There you have the possibility of doing a boat tour on the lagoon, but we didn’t do it. We went to the beach. After the bridge, you turn to your right and, after a few meters, park the car and go neat the see. You will see the remanding’s of the iceberg floating in the see, standing on a black sea beach. The beach is full of the rest of icebergs and, its another magical place to see.

Hofn- The day was long and, after that we drove to Hofn (90 kms), were we wood sleep for the night.  Hofn is a nice city. And its famous for his langoustine dishes. We eat at kaffi hornið, impossible not to find, on your left when arriving to Hofn, It’s a good meal but, expensive. But, in Iceland, it’s hard not to be…

See our next day here

  2. Seriously? Southern Iceland, Sigur Ros and James Bond? Can't get any better! :D Anyway, it's very tough to squeeze this part of Iceland into one day! We had to do it as well.
