Tips for Traveling With Kids

We started our trip to Thailand with a 3 nights stay in Bangkok but, after it, it was time for us to explore the magnificent Thai beaches that filled our fantasy for years. We had doubts about choosing the base for our stay, but, our final choice was to do the trip from Bangkok to Krabi, instead of Phuket (you can know more about the reasons of our choice through this link).

Having made the booking of the plane trip to Krabi, we quickly found that the choice of where to stay would still lead to a new decision since the vast offer included hotels in Krabi Town, Ao Nang, as well as Railay. So, we started to search to get as much information as possible, we also talk to anyone who had already been there and now, after our return from Thailand, we would like to share the information and our opinion, in the hope that we can help you choose.

So, before we talked about our choice, we want to give some information about the three destinations referred to, namely Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Railay which, although not far away, offer different attractions for those who visit them.

Krabi Town

It can,t be said to be the most beautiful city in Thailand, but what we feel in it is that we are not in a place destined for tourists, so it retains an authenticity that we advise you to know and, especially, to visit its markets, in special nightly and held on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is the easiest and cheapest place to get to and from the airport, and by exploring the different hotel booking sites we found that the prices were the lowest when compared to Ao Nang and Railay. It is also easier to reach some famous attractions, such as the Emerald Pool and Tiger Cave, however, to go to any beach, you must always go by transport, as there is no beach nearby. If you want good accommodation, for low prices, and feel the atmosphere of a Thai city, this will probably be your place.

Ao Nang

Although not a big city, it has a good movement of people, we didn’t felt surrounded by crowds. Its streets are arranged, it is a clean city and, at the level of the restaurants, it has a wide offer, as well as tour operators. It is very easy to make shopping’s in the various street shops that are located near the sea and the principal streets, as well as you will find numerous possibilities to exchange money, as well as having a good offer on nightlife, with a lot of bars and live music.

Although Ao Nang isn't the most beautiful beach you will see throughout your stay in Thailand, it is the one that offers more deals on the level of stay, with very affordable accommodation prices and a great value for your money, everything being very organized in order to conveniently receive the visitor.

At the tour operator level, it is the best place to stay, as the offer is huge and you will not have any difficulty scheduling your tour to your favorite destination as well as owning several dive schools.

At the level of health care, there is a good offer that, if you are traveling with children, it is always important and you can feel safe. It’s also easy to get Krabi Airport from here.

Railay

In Railay, you will undoubtedly find the most beautiful beaches in the area. In fact, this peninsula is all paradisiacal and, if you want perfect beaches and resorts, this is your place. It is also very famous for being a paradise for climbers, with perfect places to practice, such as its calcareous walls that attract climbers from all over the world. In addition, kayak tours are also famous in their waters, something we strongly recommend that you do but, always taking into account the weather conditions.

But, what looks like the perfect place to stay, has some disadvantages. The first is that, because is surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains, it’s only accessible by boats, which depart frequently from Ao Nang and the port of Krabi, which will always delay your arrival at your final destination and, don’t operate 24 hours a day.

Please note that if you arrive late at Krabi Airport, you may not have a boat to take you to Railay. During our stay in Ao Nang, the last boat that leaves Railay was at 5:30 p.m. and on one of the days due to a stronger storm (which occurs frequently), we fear we will not be able to return to our destination due to the impossibility of the boat leaving the pear.

In our travel to Krabi, we arrived at the airport around 9:00 p.m., so we knew we couldn’t go to Railay that night, so we put that aside. Please note that if you choose to stay in Railay, book at least 4 hours before your departure to go to the airport and, in the event of a thunderstorm, consider staying the last night in Ao Nang or Krabi, to avoid the possibility of being held in Railay.

Railay has a number of quality hotels and restaurants but with higher prices than in Ao Nang. It also has a reasonable range of tour operators that will allow you to reach the places you want to visit, as well as being a perfect location for rock climbing.

Our choice

As we said, the three hypotheses have different attractions, so your choice should always be linked to your own interests. What works for some is not necessarily what others are looking for.

In our case, as you know, we travel as a family, so there is always a choice directed to what is best for those who travel with children, namely we always have the concern that is as safe as possible, to avoid unnecessary travels and, easy access to food and health care.

As Krabi was away from any beach, we didn’t wish to be always making unnecessary trips, we put aside this possibility at first, so we had to choose between Ao Nang and Railay.

We are obliged to say that Ao Nang, despite being a beautiful, huge beach, doesn’t compare to the beauty of Railay, but the fact of being secluded and only accessible by boat, led us to opt for Ao Nang. As we mentioned, the fact that we arrived in Krabi at night will not allow us to go to a hotel in Railay that night and, changing hotels the next day was not the desired option.

Another advantage in favor of Ao Nang is the price of lodging, where we were been able to find lower priced hotels, with very good quality, when compared to Railay. Ao Nang also offers much more food and restaurants options, markets and local shopping’s, as well as health care, which have influenced our decision.

After the trip, we can say that this was, in our opinion, the best decision. Ao Nang has a lot to offer to anyone visiting this part of Thailand and, you will easily visit Krabi (especially its night markets) and Railay, your paradisiacal place after you been there. From Ao Nang, you will also be able to visit famous Thailand’s Islands, as the Phi Phi, with Maya Bay, Chicken Island, James Bond…

Our family trip to Thailand started in Bangkok, which we considered the perfect way to start your trip in Thailand (you can see our itinerary in Bangkok here) but, like the vast majority of people visiting Thailand, we also wanted to visit and get to know some of the most famous beaches in the world, especially the Phi Phi Islands and the world famous Maya May.

That being the case, and after studying the different possibilities a bit, we were left with the same doubt that many people stay when visiting this area of Thailand: where to make our base to explore the different beaches Phuket or Krabi (more specifically Ao Nang)?

Both options look great when you study both destinations and, that was a really difficult decision to make, as it probably will be for you. In this way, we hope that by talking about our decision and the reasons for our choice, help you make your decision to. Before we talk about our choice, let us just talk a little about both destinations.

Phuket

Phuket is probably the most famous place for travelers to this area of Thailand. It has a huge offer of hotels and hostels, restaurants, many tours options and different activities for adults and children, as well as a great offer of flights at very low prices, from a lot of different airports.

The nightlife in Phuket is also world famous and is one of the big reasons for so many tourists to visit this big island.

The less positive points we discover online were, according to our research, that although there are beautiful beaches, they are often very crowded. The less crowded beaches are usually away from the hotels, which forces more trips.

Another of the less positive points is that there are growing reports of the growth of sex industry, and for those of us who want to go on a family trip, prostitution and ladyboys are not the scenarios we wanted.

We also conducted a survey and found that the prices charged by different touristic companies for the normal tours, including the famous Phi Phi Islands, tend to be more expensive in Phuket than in Krabi.

Krabi

Krabi is not far from Phuket (just over 2 hours by car) and there is the possibility of catching a ferry connecting Phuket and Ao Nang (you can find out more information about prices, schedules and buy tickets online here).

Although we are referring to Krabi, we did not really stay in the city, although we highly recommend you to visit it, especially its markets. We decided to stay in Ao Nang beach, as it is a place also with a lot of offer at the lodging level, for very affordable prices and with several offers of restaurants and touristic companies.

Maybe not so much as Phuket, but there are a lot of possibilities to do activities with your children and, of course, the possibility to visit wonderful beaches, the main reason for the fame of this area of Thailand. At nightlife level, its offer is not as varied as Phuket too.

Final choice

Well, our choice was not easy, just as it will not be yours if, like us, you are trying to decide your base for exploring these wonderful beaches.

Of course, this choice will always be linked to what you want to accomplish and to your travel goals. For example, if you are looking for wonderful resorts and nightlife, Phuket is probably your best bet.

However, for a family trip like, as was our case, we chose to stay in Krabi or, more specifically, Ao Nang, right by the beach.

And the reasons that led us to this choice are simple. The first the price. On the flights level, we didn't find significant differences in travel to Krabi or to Phuket. On specific dates, even the Phuket option was a bit cheaper, which may not always happen, as the offer is higher for Phuket but, however, we did not notice any significant difference. Where we noticed the biggest differences were in the hotel and tours prices, where both cases in Krabi (Ao Nang) were cheaper.

Then there were other issues that in our case helped us to make that decision, including the issue of security and prostitution, where we thought it would be best for a family trip to stay in Krabi, namely Ao Nang beach.

After making the trip and, of course, without knowing Phuket we can say that we felt we had made a good choice. Having stayed by Ao Nang beach was a great option. We got fantastic prices for the hotel, great quality and, throughout our stay, we always get good meals at good prices, given that we are in a tourist spot. You can see our four days itinerary in Ao Nang by clicking here.

Although, as we mentioned, being a tourist spot, we never felt crowded, and we were able to make the most of our holidays safely, with fun and with a wide choice of activities to do.

Something that we cannot fail to point out is that staying in Krabi or Phuket you will always have the possibility to visit the Phi Phi Islands and the world famous Maya Bay. You will probably even get lower prices if you leave from Ao Nang (Krabi). But do not forget that, during the low season in Thailand (June, July, and August), this beach is closed to tourism to recover from the environmental damage caused due to the huge influx of tourists that have taken place since it was filmed the Beach movie, with Leonardo Dicaprio.

During our trip to Bangkok (you can see here the itinerary of our family trip here) we were able to eat wonderful Thai food but, our last dinner was perhaps the best meal in Thailand. What's more, for an incredible price!

Therefore, we could not fail to bring you this tip, which can be very useful when you are traveling (or preparing your trip) to Thailand.

For those who don't know, Pad Thai is known as the national dish of Thailand and,, when you are traveling through Bangkok, you will receive dozens of invitations to enter different restaurants to eat Pad Thai.

Originally known as street food and a cheap meal option, Pad Thai is now the best known dish in the country. Pad Thai is made with soaked dried rice noodles, which are stir-fried with eggs and chopped firm tofu, and flavored with tamarind pulp, fish sauce, dried shrimp, garlic or shallots, red chili pepper and palm sugar and served with lime wedges and often chopped roasted peanuts.

In Thailand you can eat this delicacy in all types of restaurants, from street restaurants to the most expensive ones, and you can choose different flavors and accompaniments (in our case, the preferred was shrimp).

Thip Samai

Let's then talk about the reason for this post, which is to talk about the best Pad Thai we have eaten in Thailand, and it was in Thip Samai restaurant (you can see here the exact location on Google maps)

If you stay in "old Bangkok" (our hotel was close to Khao San Road), you can easily reach Thip Samai restaurant on foot, but if you can't do this (or don't want to do), we recommend the famous Bangkok tuk tuk, as well as taxis or using the Grab car application, which always worked very well during our trip to Thailand.

History

Thip Samai restaurant and Pad Thai is so connected to the history of Thailand that there's even a cartoon explaining it. Here's the story:

When you arrive at Thip Samai you will see that the place is not luxurious but, you will also probably come across a long queue (often a sign of good food), which is normal but, we can assure you that the service is fast and, as the food is cooked outside the restaurant, in the street, you will be able to observe the spectacle that is to see a team in perfect synchrony. Believe me, you will be marvel.
As we mentioned, the queue goes fast and, upon entering, will verify that although the price of the meal is cheap, you will pay for some extras, namely even for the air conditioning of the restaurant, but nothing that makes this restaurant expensive. On the contrary, it is an extraordinary meal for a very low price.

When you sit down, you will have at your disposal a small paper with the different possibilities of choice. In our case, we chose the Pad Thai Superb (90 BAHT, less than $3USD or € 2.5) and it was perfect.
Regarding drinks, there is nothing more than water and a delicious orange juice, but if you choose juice, prepare yourself as it will be more expensive than your dish.
Just write your request and wait, as the service is very brief and you will quickly have a Thai Pad in front of you, perfectly wrapped in a thin layer of delicious fried egg, that works great either visually or on the palate.
It may be difficult to have an waitress who speaks English, but this does not result in any problem. The paper in which you will make your requests is in English and everything else is easy to communicate.

Pad Thai to go

If you don't want to wait to be seated in Thip Samai restaurant (we recommend you to wait, for the full experience), you can also order to take your food and then it will be served more quickly.

Thip Samai

This was, for us, Pad Thai's ultimate Thai experience, and the only problem is, after we eat there, we didn't had the chance to return and, on the remaining days of our family trip through Thailand, all the Pad Thai we ate were a small disappointment, compared to this extraordinary meal. If we one day return to Bangkok, for sure we will return.
Restaurant opening hours:
This restaurant operates every day of the week but only for dinner from 5pm to 2pm.

We will be waiting for your comments and suggestions on our Non Stop Family - Travel Blog.

As we had mentioned in the post on our first day in Bangkok (you can see our itinerary here to visit Bangkok on a family trip), we visited two of the most famous attractions of the city, namely Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) to Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn).

Although these attractions are very close, they are separated by the Chao Praya River, and for those who arrive there for the first time, this may not be an easy crossing.

However, with the right information, you will see that is quick and easy to go, and very fun for those who travel with children, because it is rare for a children to don't like to travel by boat.

Therefore, we would like to share our experience, in the hope of helping you to make this crossing quickly, for you to make the most of your time in Bangkok  on your family trip.

Return

After you get out of the Wat Pho Temple, to reach your new destination, you have to take a short walk to the Tha Tien Pier (Pier 8), (less than 200 meters distance).

You can see here on Google maps the path you will have to take. Don't worry about finding yourself on a path full of commerce on both sides, it may seem impossible to be on the way to a dock, but that's the correct way, you're on the right path if you're surrounded by vendors.
When you arrive at the pier, you will find on your right side a ticket office, in which you must leave 4 BAHT per person (including children). If you take money already changed, it makes the process easier, because you will see that everything happens very quickly.
After paying, you may have to wait a little (usually not a long time) to get on your boat, just in front of the ticket office.

Although it is relatively safe, take care of the children at the time of entry and, for people with reduced mobility and if you are taling your son on a stroller, it may be more difficult to get into the boat, so be careful.
The boat does not stay very long at the pier and, after a few minutes to collect the passengers, will embark on a quick trip (about 5 minutes) that will take you across the river.

Wat Arun

After the short trip, as Wat Arun is just on your left side (entrance is 100 BAHT and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

Return

After visiting one of the most beautiful temples in Bangkok, to return to the other side of the river, just go back to the place where the boat left you  on your first trip. Pay again the 4 BAHT and take the boat, nothing easier and faster.

We hope this information helps you to plan your family trip to Bangkok, a perfect destination for a family trip and, we assure you that this is a great and safe way to get to Bangkok with your children’s.

If you want to check our 2 day itinerary in Bangkok, you can see here.

We will be waiting for your comments and suggestions on our Non Stop Family - Travel Blog.
Throughout our lives, it was very frequent to hear from our friend's words like: "When you become parents, you will see that travel ends" or "It will never be the same again.".

And, we have to face it, the truth is that it will never be the same again, it will be totally different, but the totally different is not necessarily worse. From our experience, we can tell that it is a better different, we can even say that is a lot better. Discovering the world through the eyes of a child makes the experience even more fascinating, wonderful, and only increased our thirst for knowing the world.

Of course, there are necessary changes and that is what we wanted to talk about, and we leave a list of some advice that may be useful to you when you prepare your family trip.

1- Start slowly

Your dream destination has always been to meet Tokyo? Glad it was but, this should not be the destination chosen to start traveling with your small child. We recommend that you start with closer destinations and shorter journeys. It's one thing to have a baby one hour crying in a plane (believe me, it's not easy), another thing is to have him crying 7 hours, nobody deserves it, let alone the child. Don't be scared, our son never cried in one airplane...

2- Study your destination

Fortunately, with the internet, we are been able to find out everything about our destinations. This was where it came up with the idea that is the basis of our blog. It's one thing to get to a destination airport and have to figure out what transport we should get to get to the city center ... or miss the subway exit station ... so many situations that can happen but, when we travel without children, they become small inconveniences. But when we go with our children, tired from a plane trip, we can prevent them if we have done a timely study at home.

Try to study what transport you have to take to your destinations, organize your routes to avoid long hours of hiking, look for alternatives to meals, etc ... This advance plan of travel works, in our case, as therapeutic and makes us feel a little like already traveling, and is a way to prevent children and adults from fatigue.

3- Appropriate goals

What a person saw in one destination before being a father and what he can see differ greatly, you will never see Paris the same way. The pace, the hours of walking, of meals, everything is different and, it is important for the father to accept that otherwise, the trip will disappoint you. As parents, you need to adapt your expectations. We get used to needing more time to explore, and often we do not see everything that was planned but, on the other hand, it is wonderful to see the world through the child's perspective as well. For those who used to explore the nightlife of the different destinations, will certainly be a change but on the other hand, you will learn to see the other side of your destinations.

4- Talk to your child about the trip

As we have already mentioned, a trip does not start just at the moment of boarding the plane (or any other means of transport). The whole period of planning, of imagining, of studying, is already part of the trip, and an essential part of the whole process. What we advise is that the children are involved in this process. Choose together the destinations, what they want to see in each place you visit and, try to have all the opinions in the count at the time your family organize the journey. It will awaken in them the curiosity to travel and make the whole experience more interesting and pleasurable.

5- Search for attractions for children

All destinations have places of greater interest to adults and children. Make sure that when planning your trip, organize it so that it contains reasons of interest for all ages of your family members. With this we do not say to make trips only taking into account the interests of the children, traveling is also a way to widen the horizons of a child and it would also be boring to always follow the desires of the children. What is called for is a balance between the desires of the child and the ones of adults.

6- Beware of excess baggage

Today, as we remembered our first family trip, we laughed at the amount of luggage we took. For an 8-day trip through Scotland, we took enough food for 10 days, as if there were no food at our destination. As we mentioned earlier, most destinations are more than prepared for children because, of course, they also exist there. Almost everything we can carry can be bought there, so try to take the minimum for the first few days and the rest you can buy there (not worth going equipped with diapers for ten days, like we did).

7- Baby food

One of the rare exceptions for the transport of liquids in airplanes is baby food, which can be transported in quantities of more than 100ml. In this case, it is worthwhile to carry some reservations for the first meals, always taking into account where we are going, because sometimes the offer may not be very large.

Throughout our experiences, we had places where we were not obliged to open the containers, others were more rigid but, in a global way, we had good experiences in the airports that we went through.

8- Choose the right place for your stay

When you travel without children, the place where you sleep usually isn't one of the main concerns for a traveler, and in particular, this is an area where you try to save important money. However, when traveling with children, and especially with younger children, we recommend that you take extra care, and always try to verify that the place you have chosen has the necessary hygiene and safety conditions.

Fortunately, we live in a time when we can easily collect hotel/rental information with ease through the opinions of previous travelers on booking sites. So, we recommend, before making your reservation, try to read various opinions, especially from people who have traveled in a family with young children.

Also, try to see hotel conditions depending on the age of your child, there are several possibilities for adults only to pay for their stay or for not very high prices if they require a baby cot or extra bed in the room. Therefore, when making your reservation, study carefully.

9- Breakfast included, a great help

Something we have tried to have, whenever possible and when it is economically profitable, is the breakfast included in the hotel where we stayed. With children it's less of a concern and having to get up and prepare the whole family to leave the hotel before going to look for breakfast is an immense help, and when on a family trip, the more we can solve the better. And, we can say here that nobody knows, it is often possible to take some sandwiches, cakes or fruit from breakfast, which work great as snacks throughout the day.

10- Trie to cook

Sometimes you can rent a place where you can cook. In addition to saving money, it can be very facilitative when there is no identification with the local cuisine or, in the case of food intolerances of someone in the family. If this is the case, consider alternatives such as the rental of houses or rooms with kitchen.

11- Trie to stay in a central place

One of the rules for a family trip to run smoothly is to try to facilitate everything you can and, if economically viable, we recommend you to try to stay as close as possible to the places you want to visit. The less transportation we have to catch, the easier and more pleasurable the tour becomes.

Of course, always taking into account the financial possibilities of each, as we know that in many cases the difference in the price of accommodation from a central location to a slightly further away is immense and, if so, stay in the most distant but, do not forget to travel.

12- Self-drive

On our trips out of the cities, sometimes we choose to rent a car and this option has always been very successful. Besides allowing us to make our schedule, at our discretion, it becomes a practical and comfortable way of traveling and, when the children are younger, it allows them to make great and refreshing naps during the trips, which will allow the children to enjoy better the moments of visits.

13- Travel chair for the kids

If you are going to rent a car at your destination, do not forget that safety will always be the main requirement, so you always have to carry the children using the corresponding chair to the age/size of the child. The good news is that as long as the child pays an airplane ticket (from the age of 2), in the vast majority of situations he / she can take the child's seat with him free of charge, and then use it during the vacation period, saving you the amount you would have to pay if you rented the car seat at the car rental company.

However, regarding this information, the guidelines may vary according to your airline, so we ask that you always confirm with the company the conditions of carriage.

14- Baby Stroller

Something that you can also take with you for free on the plane is the baby stroller, which you can even bring to the door of the plane, and will then be returned to the exit. We can not fail to say that this is a great help during the trips, especially those that require longer periods of walking, as they allow the child to rest, as well as sleeping the famous naps.

15- Check-in Online

Something that is now easy to perform is the online check-in. This will allow you to make a quicker passage through the embarkation zone. Do not forget that, in the vast majority of cases, families with small children have priority to go to the airplane, which reduces queuing time.

16- Go with time to the airport

There is nothing worse than going running and start a trip in a stressful way, stress that will be transmitted to children and will not help anything to travel. Make sure that all moments are pleasurable for the family and, from the beginning, avoid running around. Many of the airports have spaces for children, take advantage of them.

17- Fun Bag

Together with the child, organize a bag designed for the child's fun. Choose some small, easy-to-carry toys, games, books. Although we are not big fans of a long time in front of screens, for larger flights a previously chosen games or movies can help to spend a few hours more annoying, especially on a larger plane trip.

18- Sleeping in the airplane

For larger trips, it can be a good idea to book a night flight. Nothing better than sleeping on the plane and waking up close to your destination. Do not forget to take the child's favorite teddy with you to help him fall asleep.

19- Meals on board

Another question that should be kept in mind is whether or not your family will have meals on board. In case you do not have it, you should prepare your trip well so that we do not miss anything else. We also advise you to consider the true value of choosing a low-cost company. Sometimes for a not much higher value, you have greater facilities for baggage transport, meals on board (many companies allow to choose the children's menu) and sometimes you land at more central airports, which is important.

20 - Health Insurance

This is a question that can be very important, especially when traveling with children, whose chances of getting sick are higher. There are already several companies specialized in travel insurance, so we advise you to think well before you travel.

In case of being a European citizen and traveling to a destination within Europe, we advise you to do the European Health Insurance Card, which is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) the people insured in that country. You can find out more here.

21- Service pharmacy

Always take with you those medicines that work the best in a small emergency. A small first-aid kit that has been prepared at home can be a great help.

23- Hygiene care: Life-saving wipes

Always keep in mind the places you eat and the bathrooms where you take your children. Wipes have been a great help. If you do not fully trust the hygienic conditions of where you are gonna eat your meal, wipe the cutlery with a disinfectant wipe, and if it is not possible to wash your hands properly, use the wipes as well. In this case, extra care never hurts.

24- Give kids a camera

Many of us have a camera that we no longer use. We have, and now it is our son's camera, who uses it to take the most fantastic and unusual photographs that we can imagine. You can believe how it makes the experience more interesting for children and helps them to take more care of the details.

Other help we have has to do with the routes we carry out. Often, we use smartphone applications that help us to guide on our destinations. Sometimes children get bored and tired, but when they are the "captains" and are in charge of finding the way, they seem to gain extra strength. So, give them the GPS and let them in command, it has helped us a lot.

Something that also works very well is to make a "travel diary", which may be drawings of what they saw, in the case of the younger ones, or even the writing of the older ones.

25- Identification tags

Of course losing sight of our son is the last thing we want to imagine when traveling with children, but in any case, we must always be aware of this eventuality, so we leave the advice to put in your children identification, as well as the parents' contacts and address. There are also devices that work through Bluetooth and GPS, which allow you to help locate your child in case they get lost. They are now very cheap and easy to buy online.

26- Just do it!

Many times we're afraid that something goes the bad way. But there is nothing to prove that, safeguarding the proper precautions, it is dangerous to travel. In our case, what we have verified is that it is a great experience for our son, for our family and that traveling as a family has become a more enriching experience than it already was, so we recommend it to the fullest.
