Day 5 in Iceland - Reykjahlíð, Husavik, Whale Watching and Akureyri (150 Kms)

Our plan for the day was to know a little better the Mývatn lake, and then go to the small village of Husavik for Whale Watching.

Husavik- From Reykjahlíð to Husavik it’s a 55 kms trip, in a good and safe road and, we get there in time for a walk in the village and lunch before we catch the boat.

Husavik is is a small town, situated in the bay of Skjálfandafljót, whit a population of 2500 person. It has stores, bank, hospital and even a soccer team, and its known for one of the best places in the world to see whales. And, we can tell you now, its true.

They have there a lot of restaurants but, we decided to go for the fish and chips just in the port of Husavik, and it was a great decision. Here is the address: Hafnarstett 19, Husavik 640, Islândia. The weather was good and, we just stood outside eating and watching the boats.

Whale Watching Tour- We searched on line for the best company to do our Whale Watching and, by our tickets on line before we started our trip. Our decision was to go with Gentle Giants (you can see more about them, and buy your tickets online here). We bought our tickets (something like €83, $100 USD each adult, and, for a child whit 4-year-old, it was for free. We printed at home our proof of purchase and, when we get to the port, got the tickets. Don’t worry, its impossible not see were Gentle Giants are. Don’t know if it’s the best company but, we are very happy with the choice.

It’s a 3-hour sea trip and, the all scenario its beutifull, and yes, you got to se whales, a lot of whales!  We sough sperm whales, pilot whales and humpback whales, and even dolphins. They were so close to the boat, and there were so many. Its not a cheap ting to do it but, you have to do it. They will land you hot clothes, and give you a hot cofe and a traditional Icelandic cake that will feel so good in the cold of the boat.

The guide speacks perfect English and its there to answer all of your questions. They will lend you appropriate clothes and, that is a very important thing because, when you are ate the sea, It will be the coldest you feel in Iceland. It was what happened whit us but, I have to tell, we were very lucky, because we had good weather almost the whole trip.

When we got back to the port, we drive to Akureyri (94 kms), were we spend the night.

Akureyri- The so-called Northern capital, situated in the Eyjafjörður narrow fjord, with a population of 16,000. It’s a big city for Iceland and, you will have there anything you need, sense hospital, places to eat and sleep.

We visit the fjord, the modern church by the architect Guðjón Samuelsson, walk around the streets before have dinner at the Backpackers café. Its in the principal road and, its full of life and people from all over the world. The burgers are great, and also the fries. As for the price, expensive but, don’t forget you are in Iceland.

One cool thing about Akureyri are the hearts on the red of the stoplights. All stoplights red is in the shape of a heart and, I later discover that it started in the 2008 finance crash in Iceland, and it was a way of transmitting an optimistic mindset, fighting the negativity that followed the economic crisis.

This was the night we slept the most north, and the best tetativa to see the Sun at Midnight. It was not possible, the sun set a few hours earlier but, it was a wonderful experience to drink a beer outdoors was not too cold and see all the color of the sky and the earth.
